The youth exchange “Back to the roots” will bring together 23 participants from Slovakia, Austria, Estonia, and Spain to the beautiful mountain area in Terchová, Slovakia.
During this exchange, we will be focusing on developing critical thinking skills, practical survival skills while spending time outdoors, and finally learning more about sustainable lifestyle via non-formal learning methods. We want to promote a responsible “Erasmus +” experience with low environmental impact. We will eat vegetarian/vegan food, use environmentally friendly transport, buy local, zero-waste food, and sleep in a simple house/cottage surrounded by nature.
Throughout the whole project we will have an ongoing challenge, where every participant collects points for everything sustainable, beginning with transportation. The goal is to find the most sustainable person of the project and the most sustainable country (the distance of the travel will be taken into account). We will try as best as possible, when the weather is good, to carry out our activities outdoors. Whether it’s in the garden (at the venue of this project), or around the hills near the accommodation, if you are ready to hike and spend most of the time outdoors, do not hesitate to sign up!
Location: Terchová, Slovakia
Date: 6th – 14th of June, 2019

Age group: 18-30

The application deadline is 6th of May. Selected participants will be contacted shortly after.
Are you interested in zero waste lifestyle, but you still haven’t taken the first step towards reducing your carbon footprint? Do you find it difficult to reconnect with nature and you don’t find time to be outdoors? Then you are the one we are looking for.
This is what is awaiting you:
⦁ International learning environment
⦁ Zero-waste workshops
⦁ Various challenges
⦁ Cultural evenings
⦁ … and a lot of fun!
The project will take place on a side of the Malá Fatra national park. The initial idea was to camp and sleep in tents, but we discovered that it is more ecological to stay in a simple cottage. The house is close to the mountains, so you will still get the feeling of being close to the nature and not needing a lot to survive.
The food will ONLY be vegetarian/vegan because it is considered to be more sustainable. We will take care to buy as much local/regional/national products as possible and zero-waste. We think that it is a great opportunity for meat-eaters to try something new, don’t you agree? But don´t worry we have something special for you so it will be awesome!
You must arrive before midnight on 6th of June to the venue of the project and you cannot leave the project before 14th of June. There are many options on how you can get to Terchová. Contact the organizer for more details. Please be aware that we prefer you to choose the most environmentally-friendly possible way, this does not mean that you cannot travel by plane. But instead of Connecting flight, you choose direct one.
We also cover your travel cost up to certain limit. Currently the prices are low enough to get all of your travel 100% covered. Contact the organizers for more details!
You are required to buy your own tickets and we will reimburse this cost after the project. You need to contact the organizer and send your travel info before buying the tickets. It is really important not to buy anything before receiving the green light from us.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our project coordinator, Domča. We will do our best to answer all your questions.
